Virgil van Dijk issues classy response to Liverpool contract question minutes after Arsenal draw

Virgil van Dijk insisted he is staying calm over his Liverpool contract despite being free to speak to foreign clubs in just a couple of months.

The Liverpool captain was the difference-maker on Sunday as Arne Slot's side battled back from behind twice to secure a priceless point against title-chasing Arsenal.

Van Dijk was partly blamed for Bukayo Saka's opening goal, as the England winger skinned Andy Robertson - who had been left alone on the left side of the pitch.

But minutes later he nodded home an equaliser from close-range to put the Reds back on level terms. He was unlucky to play Mikel Merino onside as the Gunners midfielder scored an equaliser, only for Mohamed Salah to net late in the game and secure the visitors a draw.

The defender is continuing to put in top-class performances despite the uncertainty over his future at the club.

Van Dijk is free to speak to foreign clubs from January 1 and could sign a pre-contract agreement to leave on a free next summer. Liverpool is believed to be desperate to keep him, but the situation regarding contract talks is uncertain.

Despite the speculation, Van Dijk insisted he's staying level-headed. Speaking to Sky Sports after full-time, the Dutchman gave little away over his future.

Listen, I’m very calm, I’ve mentioned many times before, let’s see what happens at the end of the season," he said with a wry smile. :I’m enjoying my football, i’m feeling very good physically and mentally, I’m in a good place.

"Nothing more can be said. I just want to keep enjoying the game because it’s a beautiful game that we play and I play."

Liverpool is running out of time to secure a new contract for Van Dijk, who is in the same situation as Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
