LIVINGSTON COUNTY — A pair of school districts in Livingston County are celebrating high test scores following a recent report from MLive .

According to MLive, Hartland Consolidated Schools ranked 12 in the state for the M-STEP/PSAT, and Brighton Area Schools ranked 13. That's out of 539 school districts in Michigan.

At HCS, about 65.7% of 5,900 students tested "advanced or proficient" in 2023-24. At BAS, about 64.7% of 6,646 students met that requirement.

Students took the M-STEP last spring "to gauge how well (they) are mastering state standards," according to the Michigan Department of Education . Students were tested in four content areas: English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.

HCS Superintendent Chuck Hughes said his district’s staff and students work hard to engage in learning.

"(Our) approach ensures that we continue to focus on intervention for all students K-12, both academic and behavior, through a robust system of supports.”

David Minsker, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction at HCS, said the data from MLive was a "health check."

“It’s a health check of how our district is doing instructionally and curriculum-wise,” he said.

    • Mathematics: No. 13
    • Science: No. 20
    • Social Studies: No. 34

“I want to thank the community for continuing to support the work we are doing and choosing to entrust the education of your children to us,” Hughes said.
