Cleary seeks art curator for Secunda Museum

HOWELL — Cleary University is creating a full-time position to oversee an art collection on campus.

The school is hiring a full-time curator for the Secunda Art Collection, according to a news release. The position was created after Cleary received a “Save America’s Treasures” Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services in coordination with the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Cleary plays host to more than 800 original works by artist Arthur Secunda, who traveled the world for nearly seven decades, learning and mastering most art forms. He died in August 2022.

The curator will “help restore, preserve, maintain, enrich and enhance the art collection in the Arthur Secunda Museum,” according to a release. Responsibilities include:

• Overseeing the collection of art, including restoration, reframing and preserving for future generations
• Managing the grant and serving as its primary administrator
• Organizing exhibitions, guided tours, community outreach programs and hands-on workshops
• Collaborating with faculty to integrate the collection into academic curricula
• Creating opportunities for educational and scholarly engagement

Qualifications include:

• A bachelor’s degree in art, art history, curatorial practice or a related field
• A minimum of three years of curatorial experience, ideally with university or museum collections
• Expertise in conservation, restoration and exhibition management

The curator will establish partnerships with local museums and academic institutions, according to the release. The position lasts three years, with renewal based on future funding.
