    Prep roundup: Brighton wins third straight KLAA West girls cross country title

    Brighton won the KLAA West girls cross country championship for the third straight season, coasting to 15-50 victories over Livingston County rivals Hartland and Howell Tuesday in a low-key conclusion to the dual-meet campaign.

    The Bulldogs finished 7-0 in the division and have won 24 straight KLAA West duals since losing 26-31 to Northville on Sept. 28, 2021.

    Brighton’s top nine girls ran together up front, finishing within 1.7 seconds of one another. Senior Madison McCall crossed the line first in 20 minutes, 30.2 seconds for her first high school victory.

    The Bulldogs had the top 10 runners. Hartland won 15-50 over Howell.

    In the boys meet, Brighton also swept its rivals by 15-50 scores. Hartland beat Howell, 24-33.

    Brighton’s boys also ran as a group up front, with the top six finishing 0.3 seconds apart. Brady Millington won in 16:48.8, the same time as second-place Zach Wyderko.

    Brighton, Hartland and Howell will run in the KLAA meet at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at Manly Bennett Park in Hamburg.

    Portage Invitational

    Senior Tyler Brock became the eighth-fastest runner all-time at Brighton by running a ninth-place time of 15:39.5.

    The Bulldogs finished third out of 38 teams in Division 1 with 164 points, trailing Northville (83) and Jenison (106).

    Wyderko was 31st (16:14.9), Millington 32nd (16:15.5), Tyler Outlaw 47th (16:25.5) and Blake Kulesza 50th (16:26.7) for Brighton.

    Brighton’s girls were fifth out of 39 teams in Division 1, led by Elle Bissett (16th, 18:41.1) and Lydia LaMarra (18th, 18:46.0). Ella Lorenz was 36th 19:15.0), Courtney Lince 47th 19:25.6) and Juliet Lewis 63rd (19:49.0) for the Bulldogs.

    In the Division 2 girls race, Pinckney sophomore Jaelyn Ray was sixth in 18:37.5. Madalynn Karsies was 33rd (19:52.5) for the Pirates, who were 12th out of 43 teams.

    Pinckney was 10th out of 44 teams in the Division 2 boys meet. Sophomore Cole McCraw was 20th (16:15.8) for the Pirates.

    Greater Flint Championships

    Sophomore Ava Goodman became the first Hartland girl to break 19 minutes in nine years, placing fifth in 18:57.50. Michelle Moraitis was the last Eagle to break that barrier, running 18:48.6 at Huron Meadows Metropark on Oct. 30, 2015.

    Sophia Nunnery was 10th (19:16.19) and Elliana Neuer 11th (19:17.11) for Hartland, which took second to Goodrich by a 24-40 score.

    Novi Christian Invitational

    Ella Heffner was third in 21:20.3 for Charyl Stockwell.

    Soccer

    Hartland 4, Howell 1

    Avery Bryan scored twice for Hartland, which finished third in the KLAA West at 7-4-3.

    Matthew Burris and Paulo Gjolaj scored the other goals for the Eagles, who have beaten Howell 19 straight times since losing 3-1 on Oct. 6, 2015.

    Adrian Garcia scored for Howell.

    Tecumseh 4, Pinckney 2

    Brooklyn Columbia Central 5, Pinckney 2

    Collin Gardner scored twice on assists from James Uphouse for Pinckney in each game.

    Brighton 3, Livonia Churchill 3

    Defender Andrew Bowman scored three goals in the final 15 minutes to rally Brighton from a 3-0 deficit in the regular-season finale.

    Brighton 3, Canton 0

    Devlin McGinnis, Owen Buckley and Luke Compton scored for Brighton.

    Brighton 3, Salem 0

    Buckley scored twice and Benny Booth had one goal for Brighton. Devlin McGinnis had two assists.

    Belleville 5, Howell 3

    Garcia scored twice and Nano Churruca had one goal for Howell.

    Howell 2, Walled Lake Northern 1

    After starting the season with 17 straight losses, Howell got its first victory on goals by Garcia and Xavier Geboski.

    Charyl Stockwell 1, Livonia Clarenceville 0

    Luke Bargen scored off an assist from AJ Emmerich, as Stockwell clinched the MIAC Red championship.

    Josiah Carey made 15 saves for the Sentinels, who finished 5-2-1 in division play.

    Fowlerville 5, Ionia 1

    Preston Hartke, Will Spencer, Brandon Hunt, Deegan Kaitner and Keegan Sheffer scored for Fowlerville.

    Fowlerville 2, Lansing Catholic 1

    Jonny Shea scored with 14 seconds left to give Fowlerville the victory.

    Ethan Willard scored the Gladiators’ other goal one minute into the game.

    Volleyball

    Brighton 3, Howell 0

    Brighton beat Howell 25-15, 25-8, 25-8.

    Riley Copenhaver and Abby Churches had nine kills each, while Cynthia Ockerman had eight for Brighton (17-8).

    Amelia Vogelheim had a nine-point service run in the second game.

    Brighton 3, Canton 0

    Brighton swept Canton 25-20, 25-21, 25-14.

    Copenhaver had 17 kills, Churches had nine kills, Ockerman had five blocks and Ruby Pennala had 22 digs for Brighton.

    Howell 3, Hartland 2

    Howell beat Hartland 26-24, 23-25, 22-25, 26-24, 15-6, extending the match to a fifth and deciding game after rallying from a 24-20 deficit in the fourth.

    Howell jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the fifth set behind the serving of Mackenzie Grater.

    Rory O’Connell had 22 kills, Alison Farquhar had 18 kills, Myra Grater had four blocks, and Samantha Schultz had 53 assists and 22 digs for Howell.

    Girls swimming and diving

    Brighton 98, Canton 87

    Brighton’s Grace Gray won the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.90), 100 breaststroke (1:08.92) and was on the winning 200 medley relay team.

    Field hockey

    Pinckney 2, Warren Regina 1

    Mackenna Prince and Marissa Jennings for for Pinckney.

    Tennis

    KLAA “A’ tournament

    Brighton scored 11 points to finish third behind Northville (21) and Novi (19), sending every flight to at least the semifinals.

    Brighton’s Logan Fossum won three matches in straight sets to capture the No. 3 singles championship.

    CAAC Red tournament

    Fowlerville finished fourth, with Cole Sova placing second at No. 1 singles and Ben Durbin and Grant Wilkinson second at No. 1 doubles.
