Drivers heading for downtown Rock Island need to avoid a street due to a natural gas leak, according to a news release from the city.

The Rock Island Fire Department is currently on the scene of a natural gas leak at 17th Street and Third Avenue. This is next to the city parking lot. The gas leak was reported at about 9 a.m., saying a natural gas service line was damaged by a contractor working in the area.

Chief Robert Graff said the fire department is closing off the area to allow MidAmerican Energy to repair the leak. The public is asked to avoid the area until further notice. The timeline to repair the leak is unknown.
