There’s lots of news coming out of the Quad Cities Animal Welfare Center (QCAWC) about keeping pets safe from a virus, supporting the shelter while saving money and how to turn your pet into a calendar model.

    Parvo on the rise

QCAWC says there’s a rise in cases of Parvo Virus around the Quad Cities. Parvo is highly contagious and fatal if left untreated. The virus can live almost anywhere, such as a contaminated lawn, a dog bed or someone’s shoe. When an infected dog releases the virus through vomit or feces, any dog that comes into contact with it can contract Parvo.

Fortunately, Parvo is preventable by having dogs and puppies vaccinated. QCAWC offers low-cost Parvo vaccines during its clinics/mobile clinics .

    New fundraiser

The group is raising needed funds this fall with the SaveAround Coupon Book Fundraiser. The $25 book has over $5,000 in savings at local and national stores like Burger King and Dick’s Sporting Goods and $10 from every book goes directly to support QCAWC. Coupon books can be picked up at these locations during normal business hours:

Adoption & Education Center, 724 Second Avenue West in Milan. Open Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 12 – 5 p.m. The center is closed on Sundays and Tuesdays.

Spay/Neuter & Wellness Clinic 612 First Street West in Milan. Open Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. The clinic is closed weekends.

    Pet Photo Contest Calendar

Entries are now being accepted for the QCAWC second annual Pet Photo Calendar Contest. Pet parents can send in photos of their pets for a chance to be featured in the 2025 calendar.

Want to commemorate a special day in your pet’s life, or be guaranteed a spot on the calendar? Reserve the date of your choice to honor your pet, such as adoption anniversaries, birthdays (pet or owner) or any other special day. Just choose the date, submit a photo and pay a fee. Dates are first come, first served. Dates cannot be used for more than one pet.

Click here for more on the calendar, including submission guidelines and where to buy the 2025 calendar when it becomes available.
