A Bettendorf man was arrested this morning after police say he was in a vehicle collision that killed his passenger.

According to the complaint filed with Iowa Courts, Alexander McNicol, age 19, was driving south in the 700 block of 15 th Street on August 16 at about 3:14 a.m., lost control and collided with a parked vehicle. The front seat passenger in the defendant’s car died as a result of injuries in the crash. That individual has not been identified.

McNicol told police officers that he was driving the vehicle and drank alcohol before the collision. The complaint noted that he had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath and was unsteady on his feet while walking. A search warrant was served to collect a blood sample from McNicol, who later showed a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .154 and the presence of marijuana metabolites.

Officers conducted an investigation and determined that McNicol was driving the vehicle in a reckless manner and was driving 45 mph in a 25 mph residential zone down a steep hill. A warrant was requested for his arrest. McNicol was released on bond and has an arraignment scheduled for October 3 in Scott County Court.

Parents: get your older kids an Uber gift cards on a regular basis. Drinking and driving doesn't need to exist in this day and age. What a heartbreaking story for both people in that car.
