A Clinton woman was arrested after police say she sold drugs to someone who later died, according to a news release from the Clinton Police Department.

Officers began investigating the death of Keaton Merle Olson, 19, on February 28. According to the criminal complaint filed in Clinton County Court, on February 27 at about 10:42 p.m., Carroll County (Illinois) 911 Center received a call about an unresponsive person in the 5000 block of Route 84 in Thomson. EMS attempted lifesaving measures and took the victim, identified at Keaton Olson, to Mercy One Emergency Department in Clinton. Olson was pronounced dead at the hospital just over an hour later.

Investigators were able to access Olson’s messaging records, which showed several messages between Olson and Camren Cady, 20 of Clinton. The messages indicated that on February 27, Cady delivered controlled substances to Olson in exchange for money. The delivery was made hours before Olson was found unresponsive at his father’s home. His father told investigators that he had driven Olson to Clinton to briefly meet someone, later determined to be Cady. Investigators seized pills at the scene that tested positive for fentanyl in a lab. The medical examiner conducted an autopsy and listed acute mixed drug intoxication; cocaine and fentanyl as a cause of death.

After a lengthy investigation, officers obtained an arrest warrant for Cady for delivery of fentanyl less than 5 grams, a C Felony. Cady was arrested on September 18 without incident by the Clinton Police Department Criminal Investigation Division. She is being held in the Clinton County Jail on a cash-only $50,000 bond. She has a preliminary hearing on September 27.

According to Iowa Code 124.401(1)(g) , Delivery of Fentanyl Causing Death – “A person who causes the death of another person while participating in a violation of this subsection (124.401(1)) and who is not entitled to protection undersection 124.418, shall be sentenced to three times the term otherwise imposed by law, and no such judgment, sentence, or part thereof shall be deferred or suspended. A C-Felony is a crime that can be punished by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of $1,370 – $13,660.”

The Blackhawk Area Task Force, Carroll County Illinois Sheriff’s Department and the Clinton County Attorney’s Office assisted in the investigation.
