Boaters, bike riders and drivers need to pay attention as Rock Island starts sprucing up Lake Potter in Rock Island.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) – Rock Island District’s contractor, Legacy Corporation, will mobilize equipment and begin dredging operations at the entrance to Lake Potter in the Mississippi River and areas within Lake Potter, starting on Monday, September 23. The dredging work is expected to be finished within 30 calendar days, weather permitting. All access to Sunset Park and Sunset Marina will be limited during this time to the south entrance via 31st Avenue. The north entrance from 18th Avenue, including Sunset Lane, Skafidas Parkway and the Great River Trail bike path entrance, will be closed for the duration of the project. Access to Riverstone Group and the Rock Island Boat Club will remain open.

The closures will allow the contractor to safely offload dredge material from the Mississippi River and take it to the sediment basin on the east side of Lake Potter. Recreational boaters are asked to maintain a minimum distance of 100 feet from the dredge equipment for safety reasons. Drivers are asked to follow all posted construction signs for detours and street closures and watch for trucks entering and exiting the construction zone.

The Rock Island Boat Harbor received $1 million for harbor dredging through the FY24 Regular Appropriations Bill (Public Law 118-42) as Harbor Maintenance Trust Funds under the Operation and Maintenance Appropriation.
