A Bettendorf man is in the Scott County Jail after a man he is accused of assaulting in Davenport back in 2015 died from his injuries.

Kamden Shelton, 33, is being held on no bond on a charge of second degree murder. According to the criminal complaint, on October 15, 2015, the Davenport Police Department was called to The Chorus Line Strip Club on N. Brady Street regarding an assault. Officers found the victim in the club and took him to a local hospital. He was later taken to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for emergency treatment of critical head injuries.

Investigators at the time determined that Shelton and two other men attacked the victim with their fists and feet. Club surveillance cameras caught the assault. The victim was left in a chronic vegetative state requiring long-term medical care after the assault, according to the criminal complaint. The victim remained in long-term care facilities until he died in April 2024. The autopsy revealed that the victim died from complications of remote blunt force head injuries and the manner of death was listed as homicide.

Juan Shelton, one of defendants, was sentenced in 2017 for his part in the assault, according to court documents. He pleaded guilty to a charge of willful injury resulting in serious injury and was sentenced to a mandatory minimum of three years in prison and up to 15 years, with credit for time served. A second count of attempted murder was dismissed.

Trenton Shelton, another defendant in the case, was also sentenced in 2017 for his part in the assault, according to court documents. He pleaded guilty to a charge of willful injury resulting in serious injury. He also pleaded guilty to a charge of assault while participating in a felony, but the state did not pursue that charge. A third charge, attempt to commit murder, was dropped. He was sentenced to 15 years, with a mandatory minimum of three years on the willful injury charge and five years for the assault while participating in a felony charge.

Kamden Shelton is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on October 18.
