Iowa’s final touchdown in their 40-16 beatdown of Washington was one that they had been waiting to unleash. Wide receiver Dayton Howard caught his first pass with the Hawkeyes, and took it 33 yards for a score.

“I was ecstatic, I had a blackout moment,” Dayton Howard said. “I mean it’s my first touchdown, I’m hoping there’s many more to come. I was just excited to finally contribute to the team and make an impact.”

“That play we hit on with Dayton was actually a play we had practiced for months now, and we were finally able to run it.” Cade McNamara said.

It’s the first time the redshirt freshman could help his team after spending his first season on the scout team. Howard’s main focus his first year on campus was to gain weight and learn as much as he possibly could.

“The last year has been a big learning experience coming in and not knowing what to expect about college football in general.”

All those emotions boiled over after the play with a spike and a 15-yard penalty. Head coach Kirk Ferentz wasn’t too thrilled but knows that this all a part of the process.

“Good learning experience on the end of that play because you can’t do that either,” Ferentz said. “He’s not fully developed physically but we’ve seen a guy that shows up and works hard.”

The freshman receiver from Kansas City, Missouri will get his next opportunity to make a big time play against Michigan State on Saturday night.
