Turns out there’s still something to smile about for horror fans.

    ‘Smile 2’ (IMDb)

The sequel to the 2022 “Smile” is even better than the first. It’s big production about a rock star whose life is a series of big productions.

For those who haven’t seen the original – and no, you don’t need to see it before you enjoy this one, although you’ll enjoy the sequel more if you do – the idea is that there is a sort of demonic parasite that takes over a person’s mind after the victim sees a person grinning maniacally as they take their own life.

“Smile 2” takes place right after the end of the first movie, with a familiar character appearing to link the two together.

The talented Naomi Scott should receive an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of lead character Skye Riley, a pop star who has embarked on a comeback tour after a struggle with alcohol and drugs and a devastating personal loss.

Skye, who is making publicity rounds as her tour begins, desperately needs Vicodin one night and goes to visit her former drug dealer (Lukas Gage.)

To say he’s acting strangely is an understatement. Within minutes, he kills himself in front of her. But Skye doesn’t tell anyone. She’s under enough public scrutiny right now, and she could even be considered a suspect.

Now Skye is haunted by something a lot more sinister than her overzealous fans … or at least she thinks she is. Her overbearing mother, her loyal assistant, and fans taking videos on every public street enhance the growing terror Skye feels.

The casting is wonderful, and made all the better by a small but pivotal role played by Ray Nicholson. Horror aficionados who appreciate “The Shining” will instantly recognize that smile as being very like that of Ray Nicholson’s father, Jack Nicholson.

This is gruesome, so it’s not for the faint of heart. For others, it will be a welcome treat this Halloween.

    3 ½ stars

Rated: R for gore, graphic violence and foul language.

Running time: Two hours and seven minutes.
