Rock Island’s blowing smoke rings- certainly on the business front.

City council this week adopted a moratorium that keeps new vaping stores from opening for the rest of the year. That’s supposed to give city staff time to come up with possible rule changes for these businesses.

Rock Island’s also in the process of finalizing a deal to bring a legal marijuana business to the city. The owners of Nature’s Treatment in Milan want to relocate to Rock Island.

It would be a chance for the city to capitalize on the tax revenue windfall from legal marijuana.

Vaping and the marijuana dispensary aren’t the only things on Rock Island’s agenda. There’s also the ongoing overhaul of the streets in the heart of downtown.

Host Jim Niedelman talks about that with Mayor Mike Thoms.

“We tried to regulate it by zoning, by B2 zoning or B1 zoning in different business districts, and we found that we still ended up with too many who are trying to concentrate in one area,” Thoms said.
