Gaslight Baker Theatre welcomes audiences to the Renaissance with the hilarious, imaginative and sometimes-poignant Shakespearian (sort of!) production of Something Rotten July 12 - August 4.

“Can this humble stage hold the Renaissance? Only in your imagination,” Jason Jones, the show’s director, said. “Please accept this humble offering of our troupe as an artful approximation.”

The cast is chock-full of actors, directors and technicians with experience to pull off a grand production that includes over 30 people. Toss in a live band, and the show is certain to be long-remembered.

“Shakespeare is an amazingly polarizing subject,” said Jones, who also serves as the President of the Gaslight Baker Board of Directors. “I confess to being part of ‘Team Shakespeare’ but as it’s touched on in our musical, there are those who hate The Bard with an equal passion. An equally contested subject is that of ‘Musical Theatre.’ Even within the Theatre community, you will find those who utterly detest musicals and those who won’t perform or attend anything but musicals.

“Now you find yourself here with us, waiting for the stage to come alive with a musical satire of both musicals and Shakespeare.”

Jones invokes Hamlet while simultaneously embracing the joy and laughter this production is sure to bring.

“‘I must be cruel only to be kind’ said Hamlet to his mother the queen, and so do we embark on a derisive but hysterical cruelty to honor these two things which have given so much to the world,” Jones said. “Sit back, relax and don’t take us or yourselves too seriously tonight. Let yourself laugh and allow us to poke fun at many things that we hold dear and so give them a position of honor.”

Or… “If we shadows have offended, Think but this, and all is mended: That you have slumbered here, While these visions did appear; And this weak and idle theme, No more yielding but a dream, Gentles, do not reprehend, If you pardon, we will mend” – Midsummer Night’s Dream Or... “Glory’s in the air! Glory’s in the air! And what am I doing? I’m running around on a dark stage like an idiot.” – Pippin Or... “Shapoopi” – The Music Man Come see us!
