Home Talent: Poynette falls to Rio, Montello
Issuing too many free passes got Poynette in trouble against Rio. Following that 9-3 Night League loss on Thursday, July 11, the Indians dug too big a hole to get out of in an 11-3 loss to Montello on Sunday. “Montello hit the ball well today, and we weren't able to answer,” said Davy Tomlinson, Poynette manager. “We fell behind early and really couldn't mount much of a comeback.” ...
An Outdoorsman's Journal: The Dushek Boys, Then and Now
Hello friends, This column has spanned over 35 years of my life and this week I have returned home from a wedding on Madeline Island that I simply have to write about. I think that you will understand after reading it and as always, thanks for reading. In 1997 Kevin, Travis, and Joey Dushek came into my life as I was dating their mother. I had been writing this column...
Lodi building girls wrestling program
Over recent years women’s sports have gained greater attention. Women’s wrestling in particular has seen massive growth at the collegiate and high school levels. The NCAA has projected it will hold its first women’s wrestling championship in 2026. More and more colleges are adding the sport, including UW-Stevens Point. Likewise, more states are sponsoring the high school sport. Including the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association, who is building up to a team state tournament in 2026-27. ...
An Outdoorsman's Journal: Canada/The Best Week of the Year
Hello friends, Last week, and this one as well, I am writing to you about a seven-day fly in fishing trip to Shultz Lake in Ontario, Canada where we fly out of Red Lake with Chimo Lodge and Outposts and have been for 42 years. We are a tight-knit group of guys and gals that share the same deer and duck camp as well as our annual Shultz Lake adventure, for seven days the only people we see are the ones in our group. ...
Home Talent: Poynette, Knuteson blank Waterloo
Strong pitching, a big double play and an opportunistic offense resulted in a 10-0 win over Waterloo for Poynette in Home Talent League play on Sunday. Andy Knuteson threw a complete game, his first of the year, to lead the Indians, scattering five hits and striking out two on only 84 pitches. “Andy did a great job on the mound today,” said Davy Tomlinson, Poynette’s manager. “Every pitch was working,...
Auto Racing: Schwanbeck keeps it close in Legends division race
The fireworks visible in the distance on Saturday evening were no match for the fireworks on the track at Jefferson Speedway. Another night of fantastic racing action saw Stephen Scheel of Lake Mills parked in victory lane following the KNR Transport 50 lap Late Model main event. Scheel took control of the top spot before the halfway point and held off the challenge of Seth Reamer to seal his first win of the season. Kyle Smith and Scott Patrick led the field to green with...
Boys golf: Lodi receives GCAW Academic All-State honorable mention
The Lodi boys’ golf team earned Academic All-State recognition for its work in the classroom from the Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin while participating in the 2024 WIAA boys’ golf season this past spring. The Blue Devils achieved GCAW All-Academic honorable mention in Division 2 for the 2024 season. Established to recognize high school golf teams with the highest team grade point averages (‘team’ is defined as the five golfers on the roster for the boys’ spring 2024 WIAA regional tournament), the GCAW recognizes the three teams with the highest cumulative team GPA in each division (1, 2, and 3) with gold, silver and bronze medals for each student-athlete, and their schools receive a certificate to note this accomplishment. Schools with at least a 3.25 team GPA will receive a certificate acknowledging honorable mention status. Lodi members include Walter Beld, Kogen Baron, Sawyer Baron, Trevor Kutz and Jacey Heinzmann.
Home Talent: Montello rallies late to knock off Poynette
So far this season, the Poynette Indians’ defense has been top-notch. It failed them at Montello on Sunday in a 12-4 road loss in a battle of Home Talent Eastern Section teams. “We weren’t at our best today and it cost us,” said Davy Tomlinson, manager for Poynette. “After the second, their pitcher settled in and did a good job the rest of the way. We had a few defensive errors today, which is uncommon for us. We need to get back to excellent defense...
Schwab joins exclusive club with second Ray Fischer Amateur Championship crown
JANESVILLE — With a course conducive to making birdies and eagles, no lead is safe during the Ray Fischer 72-Hole Amateur Championship. Dustin Schwab of Lodi learned that lesson — and in turn gave it to another player during third and fourth round play Sunday on Riverside Golf Course. What was a four-shot lead halfway through the tournament evaporated on the final day, and thanks to a double bogey about...
Poynette's Schwanbeck wins Legends feature
Wisconsin Dells pilot, Michael Grueneberg, scored his first feature win of the season on Saturday evening at Jefferson Speedway. Grueneberg came from the outside of row four and claimed the lead following a late caution to net the win in the Legacy Auto Sales 50 lap Late Model main event at Wisconsin’s Action Track. Tim Coley and Seth Reamer paced the field to green with Reamer grabbing the early lead...
An Outdoorsman's Journal: Return of the Canada Gang
Hello friends, Back in 1982 I was 21 and my brother Mike was 25. Along with my dad, the late Robert Walters, and a family friend, we flew by float plane to Shultz lake, which is 55 air miles northwest of Red Lake and absolutely kicked butt on walleye and northern pike. Forty-two years later Chimo Lodge and Outposts, formally owned by my good friends Pete and Elizabeth Hagedorn, is owned by Chris and Tammy Leblanc and I am happy to say there is not...

Home Talent: Poynette rallies to defeat Deacons
Stranding 13 baserunners, the DeForest Deacons lost a late lead in a 4-3 Eastern Section Home Talent loss to Poynette on Wednesday, June 19. It was a makeup game from a postponement earlier this season. The Deacons went up 1-0 in the top of the second inning on a home run, but the Indians tied it in the third when Andy Knuteson doubled and scored on an error. An RBI...
An Outdoorsman's Journal: Lake Matilda
Hello friends, This week's column is dedicated to Michelle Chiaro, who was the queen of my world and passed away on June 15, 2022. In March of 2023 I was sitting at my desk and looking out my window when I noticed that my swimming pool had literally disintegrated. I had a swimming pool for 25-years and knew I would have to get another one. Within one week of the...
