    Homecoming celebration: Poynette defeats Markesan, 28-0

    On the eve before Homecoming the Poynette Pumas hosted Markesan in an Eastern Suburban conference matchup. Poynette etched their third win of the season by defeating their conference opponent by a score of 28-0.

    Scoring in the first quarter was quiet on both fronts. Poynette would score with two minutes left in the second quarter. Running back Vance Hathaway would rush for 15 yards straight into the end zone for the Pumas first score of the night. Hathaway finishished an explosive night with 108 rushing yards to go with his touchdown. Hunter Webster, the kicker, would make the extra point for a 7-0 lead. Webster would be 4 for 4 in extra point attempts on the night.

    Johnny Berg had a night on defense with a sack on Markesan’s quarterback, 12 total tackles and a fumble recovery touchdown in the third quarter to put Poynette up 14-0. Poynette would score again in the third quarter. Quarterback Ashton Meister would connect with Justin Wells for a 34 yard touchdown pass to put the Pumas up 21-0.

    At the 8:40 mark of the fourth quarter, Meister would connect with Owen Breuch for a 19 yard touchdown pass for the final scoring play of the night. The Pumas moved to .500 with a record of 3-3.

    Meister finished the night with 154 passing yards, and didn’t rush for any. On defense Carter Petersen recorded 17 total tackles, and forced two fumbles. Justin Wells had 103 receiving yards, six total tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery.

    Poynette had a total of 154 passing yards to Markesan’s 49 passing yards. Friday’s contest was more of a running game for Markesan. In 47 rushing attempts, the team recorded 190 rushing yards. Poynette wasn’t too far behind in the running game with 131 rushing yards.

    The Pumas face another conference opponent in Deerfield on Friday, Oct. 4.
