AVON, Utah — Utah State University football player Andre Seldon, Jr. died Saturday after an apparent drowning at a Cache County reservoir.

The Cache County Sheriff's Office said it received reports of a possible drowning at Porcupine Reservoir around 2:20 p.m. Callers said a young adult male did not resurface after diving from the cliffs into the water.

Search and rescue crews, including a dive team and helicopter from the Utah Department of Public Safety, responded and worked all afternoon and evening to find the victim.

Late Saturday, the sheriff's office announced that the victim's body was recovered from the water around 9 p.m. Shortly before 11 p.m., Utah State officials confirmed Seldon was the victim.

Seldon, a cornerback from Belleville, Michigan had transferred to Utah State from New Mexico State earlier this summer. He originally signed and played for the University of Michigan out of high school before transferring after his first two seasons in Ann Arbor.

In 28 games with New Mexico State, Seldon had 96 tackles and 2 interceptions.

“Our football program is heartbroken to have to endure the loss of one of our own,” said interim head coach Nate Dreiling. “Having had a previous relationship with Andre during our time together at New Mexico State, I can tell you he was an incredible person and teammate. Our condolences and prayers go out to Andre’s family as we grieve with them over this tremendous loss.”

This article will be updated as the situation develops and as more information becomes available.
