If you want to see what some of the best programs in the state have this year we have a couple of traditional powers coming in for a visit. Cold Spring Harbor will be at Yorktown and Rye this week. Garden City is going to be at Pleasantville and Lakeland/Panas will be hosting Niskayuna.

    Here is this week's schedule:

Under the Helmet: Get to know some of the top boys lacrosse players in the Lower Hudson Valley

    Recaps

    Wednesday

    Garden City 11, Pleasantville 6

    There is a silver lining.

Rather than celebrating the progress shown while going stride for stride with Garden City well into the second half, Pleasantville lamented the untimely miscues that allowed the reigning NYSPHSAA Class B champions to pull away for an 11-6 win on Tuesday.

There is work to be done.

“It’s little things right now,” Panthers close defender Aidan Picart said. “Not sticking a couple of shots early hurt us and we’re not as deep as they are, so going down the stretch we didn’t have the stamina, didn’t have the legs. We were tied with them, but once you feel tired you start to make mistakes and that’s exactly what we did. I feel like we gave them goals.”

Erik Coleman had Pleasantville up after one and it was a 3-3 contest heading into the intermission.

“The kids were able to implement a game plan we worked really hard on and were able to play with one of the best teams in the state, if not the country, but there were some minor issues here and there,” Panthers coach Chris Kear said. “Garden City is the kind of team that if you make a mistake, they’re going to make you pay for it and that’s what happened. If we clean some of that up, I think we’ll be OK.”

Charlie Koester capped a four-goal Trojans run in the last four minutes of the third to make it a 7-3 lead. Daniel Picart netted a pair of goals to bring Pleasantville back into the game, but Garden City answered quickly when the defense lost a step and began logging penalty minutes.

“There are some positives,” Aidan Picart said. “If we play a great game against them, I think we could win that, but what it comes down to is we need to complete a game. It’s a simple fact.”

    What it means

It’s been a sticking point all season, the Panthers need to start burying shots. They could’ve had a lead going into the half. Instead, they were left with regret.

“We’ve been harping on it and it hasn’t clicked yet,” Kear said. “There were a couple of instances, first and second quarter, where we got the looks we were trying to generate and didn’t stick our shots. We thought they might come back to bite us and it looks like they did.”

    Player of the game

Koester, a sophomore took five shots for the Trojans and buried four of them.
