    Debby storm remnants brought high winds to NY airports Friday

    Friday's arrival of tropical depression Debby brought high winds to southeast NY, including the Hudson Valley, New York City and out east on Long Island.

    The Hudson Valley contended with area's strongest winds, prompting tornado watches, power outages and downed trees.

    Read on for southeast NY's highest wind gusts at airports and observation areas, as reported by the National Weather Service Friday, Aug. 9, 2024.

    These numbers are collected from a variety of sources with varying equipment and exposures, including volunteer weather observers, and are considered unofficial.

    Hudson Valley saw highest wind gusts Friday

    On the North Shore, the highest wind gusts in southeast NY were reported on Friday afternoon. Larchmont Harbor in Westchester observed gusts as high as 53 m.p.h. at 1:48 p.m. on Friday.

    Elsewhere in Westchester, The Westchester County Airport in White Plains observed gusts of 48 miles per hour at 4:35 p.m. Friday. Gusts of 41 m.p.h. were reported at 3:25 p.m. in Somers.

    In Putnam, gusts of 41 m.p.h. were reported at 2:22 p.m. Friday.

    At the Orange County Airport in Montgomery, gusts of 40 m.p.h. were reported at 2:44 p.m. Friday.

    NYC airports, boroughs contend with powerful winds

    Fiorello LaGuardia Airport in Queens saw gusts as high as 52 m.p.h. Friday afternoon. Later on in the day, JFK Airport reported wind gusts of 46 m.p.h. at 4:24 p.m.

    Elsewhere in the five boroughs, gusts of 49 m.p.h. reported at 1:40 p.m. in Queens's Kew Garden Hills neighborhood. In the Bronx, Fordham reported gusts of 46 m.p.h. at 1:55 p.m. Brooklyn College reported gusts of 46 m.p.h. at 3 p.m.

    Gusts of 43 m.p.h. were reported at 12:55 p.m. in Midtown.

    Out east: Long Island airports see high wind gusts

    In Nassau county, reports of gusts of wind topping 42 m.p.h. were seen in Bayville and Oyster Bay, at 1:06 and 2:15 p.m., respectively. Kings Point reported the highest gusts in the county Friday afternoon, at 52 m.p.h.

    Out east in Suffolk, airports seemingly had the windiest day, with the Farmingdale Airport reporting gusts of 46 m.p.h. at 1:21 p.m. and Islip also reporting 46 m.p.h. winds, albeit later in the day at 3:23 p.m. Shirley Airport reported a gust of 43 m.p.h. at 3:50 p.m.

    Elsewhere out on the island, Stony Brook saw gusts of 45 m.p.h. at 3:15 p.m., 43 m.p.h. at 4:46 p.m. at Eatons Neck, and 42 m.p.h. at Sinai Harbor at 6:07 p.m.
