Stepinac and Iona Prep open the football season on the road this weekend

Ready or not, two local CHSFL powers open this weekend on the road.

Stepinac, ranked 124th in the High School Football America Top 300, is in Delaware taking on McDonogh, in the Mid-Atlantic Pigskin Classic. The Eagles opened last week with a win and are the No. 7 team in the SBLive Maryland Top 25 this week. McDonogh has three noteworthy commits in the lineup – defensive back Brandon Finney (Oregon), wide receiver Jeff Exinor (Penn State) and defensive end Kamden Laudenslager (North Carolina).

Iona Prep, which is No. 109 in the High School Football America Top 300 will be heading to New Jersey and playing Delbarton, which is 99th on the same list. It's the season-opener for both teams. The Green Wave have only five starters back from a 10-win season and Phillip Folmar (Buffalo) is the headliner after picking up 1,000 all-purpose yards and 12 TDs last fall.

McDonogh (Md.) 40, Stepinac 14

Zaire Spellman helped get the Crusaders (0-1) within 20-7 with a second quarter touchdown, but the Eagles (2-0) responded with a pair of third-quarter scores. Jesse Osbourne also got into the end zone for Stepinac, which plays Bishop Spalding, another Maryland power next week.

Saturday

Delbarton (N.J.) 34, Iona Prep 7

The Green Wave closed with 21 unanswered points. Crew Davis had the lone touchdown for the Gaels.
