Takeaways from Rye's 2-0 win at Somers

SOMERS - It's always a great battle when Rye and Somers clash, and there's a good chance that this early-season marquee matchup between the Garnets and Tuskers won't be the last. Here are three takeaways from Tuesday afternoon's game.

    1. Potential playoff preview

Class A has always been a grind and this year is no different. Always an ultra-competitive class, the field became even more interesting as Somers, last season's Section 1 Class AA champ and NYSPHSAA Final Four participant, dropped down to Class A. Rye, who won Class A section and state titles last season, is back in the mix, and the two will be in contention for hardware once again at the end of the season.

As a result, they've certainly turned the page after last year's successful run.

"We know how good it felt to win that big, and we want it again," Rye center back Clare Nemsick said. "We're not defending state champs, we're attacking it."

Both teams have high aspirations and they may clash again down the line. It is an early-season test. Rye won the battle, but Somers should improve as the season unwinds. A potential rematch in the playoffs between these two reigning section champs would be compelling to watch.

"We knew it was gonna be a really hard game," Rye senior Lyla Keenan said. "We've had almost this rivalry against them for a long time, just because they have such strong players and it's always such a physical, wild, technical game, but our defense was ready, our offense was ready and we knew how to break their line."

    2. Rye's resilience, assertiveness was evident

The Garnets may have graduated a talented senior class, which included all-state standouts Maddy Walsh and Isabel Harvey, who were instrumental to last season's state title run, but Rye remains formidable as a team.

Their returners are a year older and wiser, while newcomers have filled in valiantly so far. Rye has undergone a trial-by-fire, with a challenging season-opening slate that included two teams that made NYSPHSAA Final Four appearances in recent years — Fayetteville-Manilus, winners of four out of the last five Section 3 titles, and Section 9 power Monroe-Woodbury, last year's state runner-up in Class AAA. Their challenging slate continues with Pearl River, Tappan Zee and John Jay-Cross River, so there's no resting on their laurels just yet.

"They've stepped up to challenges nicely, there's definitely some things we have to work on," Rye coach Rich Savage said. "I think as a unit, they played well both on and off the field. The bench is into the game, and they really give energy to our field players. There's moments where our decision-making wasn't the best, but they work through it, which is great.

"They all have grittiness. Our defense, we don't concede a lot of goals. Overall, they work well and they work together."

Despite the graduations of key players, their tenacious and assertive style of play persists. Rye was unrelenting from opening kick and always ready to compete for possession. The Garnets set the tone and controlled most of the first half. Somers kept it scoreless at the break, until Rye was able to connect with the back of the net in the second half. Lyla Keenan connected with Clare Nemsick for the first goal on a corner kick. Minutes later, Keenan received a pass from Shira Rand, and she took a couple of touches to find an opening for another goal.

"I'm pretty happy with the way we played overall," Somers coach Kelci Hegg said. "I thought the hustle was there. Obviously, it's tough to lose to Rye, but it gives us good motivation for the rest of the year."

    3. After going unbeaten against Section 1 opposition last season, expect Somers to be fired up to rebound

It might not be appropriate to call this loss a turning point, with it being so early in the season, but it definitely felt like a wake-up call for the Tuskers.

The Tuskers were on their heels for a good portion of the first half, but they remained composed even as Rye overwhelmed them with pressure, and they managed to keep it a scoreless game.

Somers appeared to play better as the game went on, and it opened things up much more in the second half. The Tuskers got more shots on goal, and they almost snagged the lead in the second half − which could have changed the flow of the game.

"It was very back-and-forth, and it was whoever scored first would kind of break it open," Hegg said. "And that was true. It was what Rye did. It was a great header off of a corner. It was contested, our keeper even got a hand to it, and it still managed to go in, so fair play to them. It was a great, great goal."

The Tuskers' best opportunity came early in the second half, when a well-placed cross on the ground resulted in a shot from inside the box, but it banked off the left post and out. Somers was able to generate more quality possessions compared to the first half, but once Rye grabbed the 2-0 lead, it was tough for the Tuskers to battle back from.

Somers went unbeaten against Section 1 opponents last season, so this bitter taste of defeat should provide plenty of fuel for them going forward.

"We knew they were going to come out fast, which they did," Hegg said. "They had us on our heels for a solid, probably, 15 minutes, and then we settled in. Second half, I just told them, 'you have more time than you think, we got to open up the midfield.' They're a 3-5-2 against our 4-3-3, and they just had more presence in the midfield, and we haven't really seen that yet. It kind of negated our three in the middle, even with Tiana (Righetti) and Jules (Arbelaez) being in there, but when we moved Jules up top in the first half, we were able to open things up a bit more.

"Second half, we probably should have done it a little bit sooner, but it was good. It was a good test for us, and I think, when we see them again, it'll be an equally good matchup."

Player of the game: Lyla Keenan, Rye — The Garnets' well-rounded play as a team stood out, but Keenan was part of a midfield unit that was assertive all game long, and she had a hand in both of Rye's goals. She assisted on the first and scored the insurance goal shortly after.

    By the numbers

Rye (3-0): Keenan had a goal and an assist. Clare Nemsick had a header goal off a corner kick. Shira Rand had an assist. Tessa Labovitz had five saves.

Somers (1-1): Julia Schmidberger made nine saves.
