Scarsdale and Ossining lament misses, settle for draw

SCARSDALE – The level of exasperation was high when the final whistle blew.

A number of prime scoring chances were missed high or wide on both sides of the field Tuesday during a fast and physical contest, so Ossining and Scarsdale were initially unsettled by a 1-1 draw. There are going to be days like this. It only took a couple of minutes before the Class AAA contenders recognized the value of each high-pressure attack or counter.

This is the kind of matchup that gets a quality team prepared for sectionals.

    Takeaways

∎ After winning back-to-back state titles, the Raiders have incredibly high expectations. They went on a 45-0-1 run before falling last week to Arlington.  It was big news. There was a measure of disappointment after Tuesday’s deadlock, as well. Scarsdale was invincible last season. This group is capable of another lengthy postseason run, but there is more competition after the move from Class AA.

“I think we just have to keep the same mindset,” senior midfielder Leo Khang said. “We can’t doubt ourselves. I like what (former teammate) Luke Peltz said a couple years ago. It’s hard to gain respect and get on top, but it’s even harder to keep that respect and stay on top. That is probably the tricky part right now, understanding that any team can beat us and treating each opponent like a team that can beat us.”

∎ Ossining is an extremely unselfish team that leans on skill along with a willingness to battle for every advantage. Finding the back of the net has been an issue for this program in recent seasons, but the goals will come if the approach stays the same.

“This is a sign of progress for us,” senior forward Brando Tuba said. “We know they are the No. 1 team and playing them can be challenging. We tried everything to win. There are a lot of good players (in Class AAA), a lot of good teams. It’s going to be hard to win. We have to practice and practice and keep getting better.”

    Game balls

▶ Khang pounded home a rebound with 24:48 to go in the first half to give Scarsdale a 1-0 lead.

▶ Tuba played the bounce perfectly and went bottom corner to knot the score with 17:43 to go in the first half.

    They said it

“I really, really miss overtime,” Khang said. “I’m not sure why they took it away. We should have won it in 90 minutes. We had our chances, but at the end of the day, we played a good game and they played a good game. A draw is what it was meant to be.”
