    World Atlas , a website publishing content about resources and entertainment on geography, has revealed 11 of New York's most darling small towns. Here are the 11 most darling small towns in New York , as determined by the World Atlas.

    Seneca Falls NY

    History is aplenty in this Seneca County town located between the northern end of Seneca and Cayuga lakes. Known as the birthplace of the American women's rights movement, Seneca Falls fully embraces its unique history. Must see stops include the Women's Rights National Historical Park and the Wesleyan Chapel, which held the first women's rights convention in 1848. The town is also home to the Seneca Meadows Wetlands Preserve for nature lovers and charming shops and cafes within its downtown district. Each December, the towns transforms into the fictional Bedford Falls for a weekend festival, as its said that the town inspired the setting featured in the movie "Its a Wonderful Life."

    Greenport NY

    A scenic coastal town in Suffolk County on Long Island, Greenport is known for seaside and surrounding beaches. Learn about the community's maritime heritage at the East End Seaport Museum or head outside to enjoy a swim or picnic on the beach or hike the forest of Orient Beach.

    Located in Niagara County, Lewiston is a "haven for unexplored adventure," according to the World Atlas. The Tuscarora Heroes and Freedom Crossing monuments are must-sees and the Robert Moses Niagara Hydroelectric Power Station, offers tours available year round. The town's War of 1812 Bicentennial Peace Garden Trail, showcases a variety of natural beauty and Joseph Davis State Park offers opportunities to hike, fish and hunt.

    Sleepy Hollow , located in Westchester County and 25 miles north of New York City, is best known for being the main inspiration for Washington Irving's “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” There are also several natural attractions nearby, including Nyack Beach State Park and Rockefeller State Park Preserve , as well as historic sites including the Philipsburg Manor and the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, where Irving and many other notable souls were laid to rest .

    Sag Harbor NY

    Located in eastern Long Island, within the towns of Southampton and East Hampton, this village is quaint with its stunning homes and quaint shops along Sag Harbor's Main Street. Learn about maritime and whaling history at the Sag Harbor Whaling & Historical Museum. Or head outdoors - Foster Memorial Beach is a nice place to walk along the shoreline, or to Elizabeth A. Morton Wildlife Refuge, a 187-acre refuge that's home to land and aquatic animals alike.

    Surrounded by pristine beaches and a vast ecosystem, Shelter Island is an island town in Suffolk County. Accessible only by ferry, a visit to the island is intentional. It is known for its natural beauty, hiking, biking and birdwatching and roughly one-third of the nearly 29-square-mile island is owned (and preserved) by The Nature Conservancy. Stop by the Mashomack Preserve , a 2,000-acre coastal nature preserve and marshland, or go kayaking or paddleboarding in Coecles Harbor or West Neck Harbor.

    Cold Spring NY

    Located in Putnam County, Cold Spring is on the Hudson River and is best known for its stunning landscape and quaint atmosphere. Nearby is one of the Hudson Valley's most famous hikes - Breakneck Ridge, a challenging trail with steep climbs. Other notable spots are the West Point Foundry Preserve , an outdoor museum that offers a view of the village's industrial history through ironworks and the Magazzino Italian Art Museum , which features post-war and contemporary art. The central part of the village is on the National Register of Historic Places due to its many well-preserved historic buildings that date back to the 1800s.

    Rhinebeck NY

    Located on the east side of the Hudson River in Dutchess County, " Rhinebeck is home to a rich history all its own," according to the World Atlas. Along with the Wilderstein Historic Site and the Rhinebeck Historical Society, Rhinebeck is also home to God’s Acre, is the burial place of 43 soldiers of the American Revolution.

    Woodstock NY

    Located in Ulster County in the Catskill Mountains , Woodstock is best known for lending its name to a particularly famous music festival in 1969, even though the festival actually took place 40 miles away in Bethel, Sullivan County. "Today, Woodstock provides a variety of great opportunities to explore the boundless outdoors," according to the World Atlas. Overlook Mountain and Catskill Center Thorn Preserve are both nearby. Mower’s Flea Market , which is open every weekend, is also wildly popular. There are also loads of performing arts centers, galleries and museums.

    Fire Island NY

    A barrier island off the southern shore of Long Island, Fire Island is part of Suffolk County and is particularly popular during the the summer months. Explore the Sunken Forest, a globally recognized rare ecological community, on its boardwalk trails. It's less than 10 square miles and cars are only allowed on some parts of the island. (You can drive onto the island via parkway and causeway though.) The island is known as a LGBTQ+ haven and has particularly welcoming communities with art galleries, restaurants and more. Robert Moses State Park (and nearby historic Fire Island lighthouse) and the Fire Island National Seashore occupy part of the island.

    Skaneateles NY

    Skaneateles , with its unique shops and restaurants, sits astride the northern tip of Skaneateles Lake in Onondaga County. Home to Carpenter Falls and Bahar Nature Preserve and of course Skaneateles Lake, the town is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. Skaneateles Lake is considered to be one of the highest Finger Lakes, at almost nine hundred feet above sea level, and there are also several parks in Skaneateles, including Cliff Park, Thayer Park and Shotwell Memorial Park. The town also boats a quaint historic district, which hosts a Charles Dickens-themed festival each December. The historic district boasts a wealth of well-preserved 19th century buildings and has been a part of the National Register of Historic Places since 1984.
