Picks: Here are the lohud high school football previews and predictions for Oct. 10-13

    FRIDAY

    St. Peter's 31, Stepinac 28 OT

John Smith went six yards for a touchdown early in the second quarter to give the Crusaders a 21-7 lead, but a tipped Hail Mary pass went for an Eagles touchdown to knot the score 21-21 heading into halftime. Kyle Patterson connected with Zaire Spellman for a 36-yard score, but St. Peter's came back again, getting the game to overtime. Stepinac had the ball first and turned it over before the Eagles connected on a 28-yard field goal. The Crusaders, who fell to 0-7, also got TDs from Jesse Osbourne and Troy Baker.

Iona Prep 34, Cardinal Hayes 27

Terron Johnson took a handoff and cut back for a 20-yard touchdown, capping a dramatic comeback. The Gaels closed with 24 unanswered points against the defending CHSFL AAA champions. Syracuse commit Rich Belin scored on a 1-yard run and had the Cardinals up 27-10 with 9:52 to go in the third, but a banged up Iona Prep defense didn’t give up another score in the second half. Crew Davis started the comeback with a 7-yard TD run and Julian Guzman hit Mamadee Sangaray for an 18-yard touchdown pass in the closing seconds of the quarter. Kadin Huling caught the conversion pass to make it 27-24. Michael Messina made his second field goal of the contest from 35 yards out with 9:41 to play after the Gaels stopped a fake punt. Cardinal Hayes was driving and was first-and-goal in the final minute, but stops by James Cooper, Zander Poole and Matthew Plunkett ended the drive as time expired. It was a revenge win for Iona Prep, which fell to the Cardinals in the league title game last fall.
