    London police, fire department to offer free rides to fight drunk driving on July 4

    LONDON, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — The London Police Department announced it will be offering free rides during the Fourth of July holiday.

    The department said on Facebook that Mayor Randall Weddle and the London City Council asked officers and the London Fire Department to offer rides to help combat drunk driving.

    The police department said officers will be out in “full force” and actively checking for divers who might be under the influence.

    According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), about 37 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes every day.

    Data released by Kentucky State Police shows 18,230 DUI arrests were made in 2023 , 1,781 more than in 2022.
