    Man fatally shot in Long Beach, suspect on the loose

    A man was shot and killed in Long Beach, and an investigation was underway Tuesday.

    Officers sent to the 6000 block of Long Beach Boulevard at about 9:50 p.m. Monday found the victim with wounds to his upper body, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

    "Officers rendered medical aid and attempted life-saving measures until being relieved by Long Beach Fire Department personnel, who transported the victim to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries," police said in a statement. "The suspect(s) fled the scene prior to the officers' arrival."

    Police identified the fatally wounded man as Vernont Murray, 39, of Long Beach.

    No suspect information was available, and a motive for the crime was not known, police said.

    Anyone with information on the case was urged to call homicide Detectives Eric Thai or Kelsey Myers at 562-570-7244, or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS. Tipsters may also use the website www.lacrimestoppers.org .
