Zaveral and Willoughby lead after day one of Au Sable River Canoe Marathon Time Trials
GRAYLING - Ryan Zaveral and Weston Willoughby, a Traverse City native, have the lead after day one of the Au Sable River Canoe Marathon Time Trials. The pair didn’t row together last year with Zaveral finishing in sixth place and Willoughby in fifth place but are now teaming up and finished at 5:09.76. “All the paddling felt good. We were kind of surprised when we crossed the line at 5:09. We felt like it was going to be faster, but you kind of live with what you got and we’re going to start the race from there.” Said Willoughby The time trials will continue on Thursday and Friday

Kenneth Joseph Wigton, age 103, passed away on July 22, 2024 in Traverse City, Mich. Ken was born on April 6, 1921 to the late Calvin Wigton and Wilhelmina “Minnie” (née Edwards) in Detroit, Mich. Ken’s brother, Donald, was born two years later, just days before Calvin died unexpectedly.
State Funding to Support Drone Testing, Electric Aircraft Charging in TC
Four projects will receive $6.25 million in funding to help bring advanced air mobility infrastructure to Michigan, including two projects in Traverse City. A $689,500 grant will allow Traverse Connect – in partnership with Munson Healthcare, Northwestern Michigan College, the Freshwater Research & Innovation Center, and more – to test using drones to deliver medical supplies, conduct water sampling and bathymetric mapping, and support emergency response around Lake Michigan. Meanwhile, a $2.6 million grant will allow BETA Technologies to install multimodal chargers for electric aircraft and ground vehicles at four Michigan airports, including Cherry Capital Airport.

Kingsley’s Eli Graves is headed to Grand Valley State
KINGSLEY - Eli Graves has been a standout running back and defensive back at Kingsley for the past couple of seasons, this past football season he led the Stags to a state championship win, putting up four touchdowns and over 200 rushing yards in the win. Graves finished his senior year with just under 2,000 yards. After the year Graves decide to commit to Grand Valley State University where he will be playing as a defensive back. “The atmosphere is going to be awesome at Lubbers stadium. So, I mean, looking forward to getting better (with) college coaching, just getting the best I can and looking for a national title.” Said Graves. He will be heading down to Allendale in Mid-August.

Turtle Creek Casino Hotel plans to add an RV park next spring
TRAVERSE CITY — For those that love the casino, you will now be able to bring your RV with you, too. Turtle Creek Casino Hotel announced they will be opening an RV park next spring. “A lot of RV people come up in this region, so we want to offer that,” said general manager Mayan Baltran. “It’s going to be an adult-themed because that’s our casino at 18-plus. However, there will be children. I mean, it’s a family-oriented area, so RV parks and traveling, we expect families.” The park will have full hook-up features, including water, sewage and electricity. There will also be a clubhouse, swimming pool and hot tub. Fifty spots will accommodate different RV sizes and configurations.
4 rescued from burning boat on Northern Michigan lake
GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, MI – Four people were rescued from a Traverse City-area lake after a boat caught on fire and they jumped overboard, officials said. All four people are OK after the incident on Saturday afternoon on Spider Lake, WPBN/WGTU reports. Other boaters took the group back to shore where they were treated by emergency medical services.

Omena chooses its next animal ‘mayor’ for the 15th year
Omena is campaigning for their next mayor but it’s not your usual election. Instead of voting for people you’re voting for pets!. The election began in 2009 and has been going on every 3 years since. From dogs, cats, horses, and even goats.... any animal can run for mayor in Omena! This year there are 18 mayoral candidates.
