UUSD awards grants to two local nonprofits
The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware recently awarded $2,500 grants to two local nonprofit organizations serving Sussex County. Recipients for 2024 are the Sussex Preservation Coalition and Community Resource Center in Rehoboth Beach. Grants were made possible by the Roy Parks Memorial Social Justice Fund, which is administered by UUSD.

Leading her team in the circle and at the plate, Ainsley Clem caught the attention of quite a few softball fans with her strikeout ability in the District 3 softball major all-star tournament by striking out 15 over nine innings of work. In the Cape team's 8-3 loss to Laurel July 1, Clem registered nine of those strikeouts while driving in a team-leading two runs on a team-high two hits. She also led her squad in steals, swiping an impressive three. Clem began playing softball in third grade, at the age of 8, for Lewes Little League. Although she has only been playing for three years, her strides as a strikeout pitcher have come thanks to her pitching coach Rachel Hudson. Clem will be a sixth-grader at the new Frederick Thomas Middle School in Lewes in the fall. In her free time, she enjoys playing with her dog, Nova, being outside, swimming at the pool and relaxing at the beach.

Police: Wanted Man Caught In The Act, Released On His Own Good Name
State Police have arrested Thomas Hetzler, 52. of Wilmington following a series of similar shoplifting incidents at Wegmans, located at 371 Buckley Mill Road in Wilmington. Officials said on the evening of July 4, 2024, around 7:00 p.m., a Wegmans employee alerted an on-duty trooper about a habitual shoplifter trespassing on the premises. The employee identified the suspect, Thomas Hetzler, who was in possession of a shopping cart filled with grocery items. Recognizing Hetzler from previous shoplifting incidents, the trooper intercepted him as he exited the store with stolen goods valued at over $300.
Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Hit-and-Run Crash in Newark
The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian hit-and-run crash that occurred yesterday afternoon in Newark that left one man dead. On July 5, 2024, at approximately 4:14 p.m., a pedestrian was walking northbound on the right shoulder of Salem Church Road, north of Michaels Lane. At the same time, an unknown white vehicle was also traveling northbound on Salem Church Road, north of Michaels Lane. For unknown reasons, the vehicle failed to maintain its lane of travel and drifted onto the shoulder, where it struck the pedestrian. The striking vehicle did not remain at the scene and fled northbound on Salem Church Road.
