RCPD: Suspect took $1,000 in merchandise from store in Manhattan
RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating alleged theft in Manhattan. Just after 3p.m. Monday, officers filed a report of theft in the 100 block of Bluemont Avenue, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report. Walmart reported an unknown suspect left the store with approximately $1,099 in unpaid merchandise.
Wild horses, burros up for adoption this weekend in Kansas
GIRARD, Kan. (KAKE) - The Bureau of Land Management is holding a two-day wild horse and burro event this weekend in southeast Kansas. The event begins at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 23, at the Crawford County Fairgrounds in Girard. Adoptions will take place August 23, from noon-6 p.m., and Saturday, August 24, from 8 a.m.-noon.
Progress notable at site of future Dollar Tree in east Emporia
Work is moving quickly to bring a new Dollar Tree to east Emporia. The building frame has been set, and walls and a facade have been erected at 920 East 12th, between Old Rum’s Liquor and Goodcents and also on space previously occupied by the Family Fun Center. Demolition began in early spring, including removal of the go-kart track and batting cages. Word on when the store will be open to the public is pending.
Microchip requirement among new animal regulations in Wichita
Pet owners in Wichita will have to have their dogs and cats microchipped under new animal regulations that are going into effect in Wichita. The requirement is one of several recommendations made by the city’s Animal Services Advisory Board, and the recommendations have been approved by the City Council.

Fire damages Lawrence senior living facility; residents safe
Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical first responders worked to put out a fire at Brandon Woods at Alvamar Monday afternoon. The initial call came in just before noon Monday, according to LDCFM’s PulsePoint app. Several fire apparatus were dispatched to the senior living community at 1501 Inverness Drive in west Lawrence.
