The eighth-floor renovation at PeaceHealth involved updating the medical-surgical unit to provide increased functionality and modifying 16 double-occupancy patient rooms to 20 single-occupancy rooms. The project involved a complete demolition and re-build of the floor and included renovations to interior finishes.
Facing the challenges of a global pandemic, PeaceHealth found itself in need of additional patient treatment space, so the original renovation plan was put on hold for over a year as the hospital grappled with an unprecedented influx of patients. Rather than reassigning the project team, JE Dunn stepped in as a trusted partner, working with PeaceHealth to alleviate the burden on an already stretched-thin staff. JE Dunn assisted PeaceHealth with critical interim projects and erected field hospital tents, created negative pressure rooms for COVID treatment and managed essential infrastructure repairs.
The JE Dunn team used mock-up workshops to plan the renovation. The contractor, in collaboration with the PeaceHealth facilities team, worked through scenarios to optimize the patient rooms. These workshops, held in an onsite garage, not only validated the design early on but also paved the way for prefabrication, saving both time and money.
The team had an unyielding focus on patient safety and financial stewardship. JE Dunn took the lead in coordinating with vendors, trade partners and design teams. The project was completed with zero change orders other than a return of nearly 6 percent of the project cost back to the owner. The money is being used for additional improvements to the hospital.
JE Dunn used the HoleMole Core Hole Filling System on the project, allowing the team to fill 280 existing holes in the concrete slab from above, avoiding the traditional disruption to hospital operations from going through the occupied floor below. This allowed the team to reduce patients’ exposure to construction and lessened coordination efforts with the nursing staff, expediting the construction schedule.
With the completion of the eighth-floor renovation, patients now have access to updated, state-of-the-art facilities designed to promote healing and comfort. The floor is home to PeaceHealth’s orthopedic joint replacement and fracture program and the renovated space provides pre-op orthopedic exercises classes and group physical therapy.
