CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – From award-winning chefs to live music all around, Downtown Charleston is a vibrant neighborhood with something to interest everyone.

For those who like life a little more on the wild side, Charleston also offers a variety of outdoor recreation. Both beginner and seasoned outdoor enthusiasts can create their own hiking, biking and kayaking adventures.

    Hiking & Biking

One of the best things about Charleston is the easy access to amazing hiking and biking opportunities.

Located just moments from downtown, Kanawha State Forest boasts an impressive 52 trails, spanning over 57 miles. Among these, Davis Creek Trail stands out by offering a serene and shaded walk along the creek.

The forest caters to both mountain bikers and hikers, with trails that vary in difficulty to accommodate all skill levels.

Maps are available at the nature center, and naturalists regularly lead guided hikes and wildlife programs for visitors.

Only 10 minutes from the heart of Downtown Charleston is Coonskin Park. With its 15 woodland and riverside trails, it offers endless opportunities for both hikers and cyclists to immerse themselves in nature.

For those in search of the perfect photo op, be sure to seek out the grotto—a hidden gem that promises stunning backdrops for your pictures.

If you are looking for something closer to town, head across the Southside Bridge to the Sunrise Carriage Trail.

This 0.65-mile shaded gravel trail takes you uphill towards South Hills through a beautiful forest above Charleston.

The Carriage Trail begins at the foot of the hill behind the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad Depot, which itself is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

This trail is an excellent spot to take your pup for a walk but must be kept on a leash at all times.

There is beauty to be found at every step of the trail.

During the spring and summer months, vibrant flowers can be found along the path. At the beginning of the trail, near the base of the hill, a small creek flows gently, providing a serene spot to rest.

Benches are conveniently placed in this area, making it an ideal location to take a break after your walk or to simply enjoy the outdoors with a good book.

This walking path is not only breathtakingly beautiful but also rich in history.

As you stroll along the trail, you’ll encounter fascinating historical treasures, such as the graves of two remarkable female Civil War spies and a memorial dedicated to Christa McAuliffe, American teacher and astronaut.

The view from the top is breathtaking! Parking is available at the bottom and top of the trail.

    Water Sports

The Elk River Rail Trail is roughly 37 miles with several river access points for kayaking, boating, and fishing. A kayak launch at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center is one of the more unique access points along the trail.

If you’re looking to pick up a new skill and explore Charleston, consider taking a guided stand-up paddleboarding tour on the Kanawha River with the Appalachian Boarding Company!

    Other Outdoor Recreation

Looking for other outdoor activities and amenities? Don’t worry, we have those too!

Picnic shelters of all sizes, horseshoe pits, and a modern playground make Coonskin the perfect spot for a reunion or birthday party.

A pond with paddle boats provides hours of fun for children of all ages.
