West Virginia coal miner dead, Governor and First Lady issue statement

CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Governor Jim Justice and First Lady Cathy Justice have issued a statement regarding the death of a West Virginia coal miner on Thursday.

57-year-old Fairmont resident Joe Crandall sustained injuries at the Arch Coal, Leer Mining Complex this week which led to his passing, marking the third mining-related death in West Virginia in the year 2024.

Governor Justice expressed dismay at the tragedy, urging West Virginians to express appreciation for those employed in the mining industry for the dangerous circumstances in which they fulfill the duties of their jobs, and to keep the loved ones of the fallen miner in their prayers.

“Any time we lose a miner, it’s a tragedy beyond belief. Mr. Crandall dedicated more than a decade to powering our homes and state through his selfless work,” said Governor Justice. “This tragedy is a reminder that we should be eternally grateful for our coal miners. Mr. Crandall will always be remembered as a true West Virginia hero. Cathy and I will keep this man and his loved one in our prayers. We ask you to join us.”

The incident which ultimately resulted in the passing of Crandall remains under investigation by the West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety, and Training and the Mine Safety and Health Administration.
