    Beckley man sentenced to probation for selling fentanyl

    BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Algie Kenya Scales, 50, from Beckley, has been given a five-year federal probation sentence for selling fentanyl .

    Court documents and statements revealed that on February 23, 2023, Scales sold around 2.7 grams of fentanyl for $300 in Beckley.

    Scales confessed to this sale and also acknowledged selling approximately 5 grams of fentanyl for $625 on March 2, 2023, and around 4.7 grams of fentanyl for $600 on March 8, 2023. Both of these additional transactions took place at a predetermined location in Beckley.

    Scales has a significant criminal record, including two prior felony convictions for distributing controlled substances.

    The announcement was made by United States Attorney Will Thompson, who commended the investigative work of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Beckley/Raleigh County Drug and Violent Crime Unit, which comprises officers from the West Virginia State Police, the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Department, and the Beckley Police Department.

    United States District Judge Frank W. Volk handed down the sentence, with Assistant United States Attorney Alexander A. Redmon and third-year law student intern Benedict Husting prosecuting the case.
