SWVCTC announces newly appointed Director of Nursing

LOGAN, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Southern West Virginia Community & Technical College has announced that Melissa Kirk has been appointed as the college’s new Director of Nursing.

Kirk brings a wealth of experience to the role, including more than 30 years of experience and dedication in the nursing and education fields, with her journey having begun in 1990 upon her graduation from SWVCTC with an associate degree in nursing. These achievements helped in developing a passion for leadership and teaching in the nursing sector which would provide guidance throughout her journey going forward.

She would obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Marshall University in 1999 along with a Master of Science in Nursing in 2004. From there, Kirk worked as a staff nurse at Logan General Hospital before moving on to become a nurse manager and eventually a house supervisor. In 2002, she became an adjunct nursing instructor at Southern before moving to a full-time role with the school the following year.

“Teaching at Southern has been immensely fulfilling,” she says of her time teaching at her alma mater. Throughout her time teaching SWVCTC students, Kirk has achieved what she refers to as her, “greatest work accomplishment,” in guiding thousands of graduate registered nurses.

The educator would complete a post-graduate certificate from Chamberlain University in Family Nurse Practitioner in 2021, affording her the opportunity to expand her professional scope to include addiction medicine and compounding her existing clinical expertise with her passion and commitment toward the treatment of addiction.
