The Academy, which took place in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is a one-week summer program that brings together students from across the Appalachian region.

Participants had the opportunity to work closely with award-winning scientists from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and other STEM experts.

The program, sponsored by the Appalachian Regional Commission, is designed to inspire and educate the next generation of leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

During the program, Emma worked in small teams alongside other students, tackling real-world challenges faced by Appalachian communities.

Guided by experienced teachers and utilizing current technology, the students developed innovative solutions through hands-on, inquiry-based learning.

In addition to research, the program offered activities focused on teamwork, exploring college opportunities, and creating pride in the cultural and historical heritage of the Appalachian region.
