CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Governor Jim Justice has unveiled significant investments in West Virginia’s state parks, focusing on enhancing the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park and Lost River State Park.

These developments, which are part of a broader effort to boost outdoor recreation and tourism in the state, involve the creation of new campgrounds and the modernization of existing facilities.

At Cass Scenic Railroad State Park, the state is investing over $8 million to construct the park’s first campground.

This new facility will feature 100 campsites, complete with water and 50-amp electrical service, two bathhouses, a check-in station, an RV dump station, as well as paved roads and utilities.

The campground is being built on the historic site of the Deer Creek Extract Plant, a significant location during World War I.

While many original structures have deteriorated, remnants of the foundations will be preserved, with interpretive signs detailing the site’s historical significance.

Construction began in August 2024 and is expected to be completed by July 2025.

Lost River State Park is also receiving substantial upgrades, with a $4.8 million investment to add 35 modern campsites.

These sites will also feature water and 50-amp electrical service, along with a bathhouse, check-in station, RV dump station, and paved roads.

The project began in August 2024 and is scheduled for completion by June 2025.

These campground projects are part of a broader $250 million investment in West Virginia’s state parks during the Justice Administration.

“I’m incredibly proud of the hard work going into the campground upgrades at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park and Lost River State Park,” Gov. Justice said.

“By improving our campgrounds and preserving the rich history of our parks, we’re inviting more visitors to see for themselves why our state parks are the best in the country.”
