MARTINSBURG, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A woman who was burned and killed by a man who was in the country illegally has been identified.

According to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department, on May 6, 2024, at around 7:30 PM, emergency services responded to reports of a couch on fire in the 100 block of Golf Course Road, Martinsburg.

Upon extinguishing the flames, first responders discovered a deceased body at the scene.

Patrol deputies from the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) immediately sought assistance from the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) and the newly established multi-agency Crime Scene Unit (CSU).

West Virginia State Police officers also joined the investigation.

During the investigation, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) informed BCSO investigators of a missing woman from their home confinement program.

Working collaboratively, investigators from both agencies began tracking the victim’s movements, quickly identifying a suspect and his vehicle.

The suspect, David Antonio Calderon, had outstanding warrants for malicious assault related to incidents in Jefferson County on April 10 and April 26, 2024.

Investigators secured surveillance footage showing Calderon and his vehicle in the vicinity of the victim’s last known location, as indicated by a GPS tracking unit.

On May 8, 2024, Calderon was arrested in Frederick County, VA, on malicious assault warrants.

The vehicle he was driving was seized, and a search warrant was executed.

Calderon, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, had previously attempted to seek asylum in Canada in March 2023 but was denied and subsequently handed over to U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.

After being released, he was issued a notice to appear in May 2024.

Calderon was charged with murder on May 10, 2024, while in custody in Frederick County, VA. He is awaiting extradition to West Virginia to face the murder and malicious assault charges.

The victim has been positively identified as Samantha Jane Dailey, a 32-year-old woman from Charles Town.
