MERCER COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The Mercer County Coalition for Healthy Communities (MCCHC) has taken an important step in addressing the ongoing opioid crisis by partnering with local businesses to increase access to life-saving resources.

Through this innovative initiative, MCCHC has collaborated with Mercer Mall and Bluefield Planet Fitness to install ONEboxes – specialized wall-mounted kits equipped with Narcan, personal protective equipment, and other critical emergency response tools.

These strategically placed ONEboxes not only provide immediate access to overdose reversal medication, but also feature instructional videos that guide bystanders through the process of administering this potentially lifesaving treatment.

By making Narcan readily available in high-traffic public settings like a bustling shopping mall and popular gym, the MCCHC is working to reduce the devastating impact of accidental opioid overdoses.

Research has shown that prompt administration of Naloxone, the generic name for Narcan, can dramatically improve survival rates, with data indicating that over 93% of overdose victims who receive this emergency intervention ultimately recover.

Through this collaborative effort, the MCCHC is not only enhancing public safety, but also taking meaningful steps to challenge the harmful stigma surrounding addiction. Recognizing that substance use disorders require a compassionate, health-focused response, the coalition has provided Narcan training to on-site staff, empowering them to respond swiftly and effectively in the event of an overdose emergency.

This proactive approach to overdose prevention exemplifies the MCCHC’s commitment to promoting community wellness and leveraging strategic partnerships to address complex public health issues.

By making these vital resources widely accessible, the coalition is ensuring that anyone in need can quickly receive the care and support required to overcome the immediate crisis and begin the path to long-term recovery.

For those interested in learning more or bringing similar lifesaving initiatives to their own communities, the MCCHC encourages outreach to Candace Harless , who can provide additional details and guidance on implementing ONEboxes and related overdose prevention programs.
