    Kanawha County cooling shelters opened in wake of Heat Advisory

    KANAWHA COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The opening of multiple Kanawha County cooling shelters has been announced following the issuing of a Heat Advisory for the area on Wednesday.

    With heat indexes up to 103 anticipated, the National Weather Service indicates that a Heat Advisory will be in effect throughout the day on 8/28/24 from 12:00pm to 8:00pm.

    Residents in the area have been advised to adhere to a number of safety precautions to safely and effectively navigate the increased temperatures. These include checking on neighbors and relatives, staying hydrated, limiting time outdoors, and never leaving children or pets in hot cars.

    To assist in combating the heat, Kanawha County has issued a list of cooling shelters available to residents on Thursday, 8/28/24 which reads as follows:

    Kanawha City Community Center at 3511 Venable Avenue – 9:00am to 9:00pm

    Manna Meal at 422 Dickinson Street – 7:00am to 1:00pm

    Kanawha Valley Collective at 1015 Smith Street – 8:30am to 7:00pm

    Roosevelt Center at 502 Ruffner Avenue – 12:00pm to 8:00pm

    MLK Jr Center at (314 Donnally Street – 9:00am to 9:00pm

    North Charleston Community Center at 2009 7th Avenue – 9:00am to 9:00pm

    Bream Neighborhood SHOP at 319 Washington Street West – 11:00am to 7:00pm

    Additions are expected to the list of available Kanawha County cooling shelters as additional information becomes available.
