WEST VIRGINIA (LOOTPRESS) – West Virginia’s regular squirrel season will open statewide on Sept. 14 and offer new and experienced hunters a great opportunity to get out and hone their hunting skills.

“Squirrel hunting is a long-standing tradition in West Virginia and is how many hunters are introduced to the sport,” said Brett McMillion, director of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources ( WVDNR ). “As the season approaches, we encourage folks to get out and enjoy this season as their first hunting experience or as practice for some of the other seasons West Virginia has to offer later in the fall.”

Squirrel hunting not only provides recreational opportunities but also plays a crucial role in wildlife management. By managing squirrel populations, hunters help maintain a balance within the ecosystem, ensuring that resources are available for other wildlife species.

Before the squirrel season starts, hunters are reminded to review the latest hunting regulations and safety guidelines, which can be downloaded for free at WVdnr.gov/hunting-regulations . The daily bag limit for squirrels is six and the possession limit is 24. There is no season limit. All other general hunting regulations and licensing requirements apply.

Hunters are also reminded that the WVDNR now offers durable license cards, which can be purchased as an upgrade to a current license or as an add-on during renewal. To purchase a hunting license, visit WVhunt.com .
