OAK HILL, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Emma Stover, a first grader at New River Primary in Fayette County, was awarded the $5,000 grand prize in the 2024 SMART529 “When I Grow Up” essay contest.

Stover was recognized during a ceremony held Friday at the Culture Center in Charleston.

The contest, which invites students from across West Virginia to share their dreams for the future, attracted 3,315 submissions this year.

Stover’s essay, in which she described her aspiration to become a teacher, was selected from 15 regional winners who were honored at the event. She was chosen as the grand prize winner through a random drawing held during the ceremony.

“I congratulate all of these students for sharing their dreams of the future,” said State Treasurer Riley Moore. “This contest is always heartwarming and inspiring, because it gives you a chance to hear what our children are aspiring to become.”

The “When I Grow Up” contest is now in its 17th year. Students from kindergarten through fifth grade submit essays that are judged in three age groups across five geographic regions.

The 15 regional winners each receive $500 toward a SMART529 college savings account. Stover’s prize included an additional $4,500 for her account.

Each regional winner’s school will also receive $500 to support school programs.

Additionally, a statewide teacher competition recognized Mrs. Saida Chaieb, a kindergarten teacher at Spring Hill Elementary in Cabell County, with a $2,500 prize.

The SMART529 essay contest is sponsored by Hartford Funds and the West Virginia State Treasurer’s Office to promote college savings and future career planning.
