    Giles County braces for worst flood since 1940

    GILES COUNTY, VA (LOOTPRESS) – Giles County officials are urging residents in low-lying areas near the New River to voluntarily evacuate as the region prepares for the worst flood since 1940.

    According to the Giles County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO), the New River is expected to crest at 21 feet at the Glen Lyn gauge by approximately 2 AM on Sunday.

    Major flood stage will be reached by 8 AM on Saturday morning.

    Floodwaters have already begun to inundate low-lying areas and roadways, according to the GCSO.

    The forecasted river levels will surpass the October 2018 flood by two feet, posing significant risks to flood-prone areas.
