FAYETTEVILLE, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A kitten is confirmed to have passed away in the night after having been abandoned after hours at the Fayette County Humane Society shelter.

The Fayette County Humane Society confirmed the heartbreaking incident in a statement on Thursday, confirming that the kitten had been left on the premises in a wire crate along with its mother and siblings in intense weather conditions.

“It was pouring rain, and the poor animals were soaked and freezing. Tragically, when we arrived for our shift this morning, we found one of the kittens had passed away,” said the FCHS, going on to point out the lawless and inconsiderate nature of such actions as it is merely the latest instance of individuals abandoning animals on the FCHS property.

“Abandoning animals is illegal. This is the third time this week that animals have been abandoned on our property. We are still in a Code Red situation with no end in sight.”

FCHS has been among several regional animal shelters to have been operating primarily in Code Red status over the course of several months, as organizations have been unable to secure the number of adoptions necessary to ease housing conditions at the shelters.

“We urge everyone to spay and neuter your pets and take responsibility for their care. Our shelter is full, and we cannot take in more animals at this time,” the statement continued. “Please do not threaten or berate our staff when we are unable to accept your animals. We are doing our best to care for those already in our shelter. Thank you for your understanding and support.”

Additional information on how to adopt and how to become involved can be found at the Fayette County Humane Society website.
