NORTH CAROLINA (LOOTPRESS) – In coordination with the North Carolina Geological Survey , officials have issued a warning for the potential risk of further landslides across the mountains of North Carolina this afternoon and evening. Following last week’s heavy rainfall from Hurricane Helene, many slopes in steep terrain remain unstable, posing a danger to residents in affected areas.

While scattered light to moderate rain showers are expected to move across the mountains over the next several hours, meteorologists do not anticipate widespread flooding. However, the rain could still be enough to trigger additional landslides on weakened slopes, further endangering those living in vulnerable areas.

Authorities are urging residents in steep terrain to stay away from landslide-prone areas and remain alert. Those living near streams, particularly at the base of mountains or in coves, are advised to watch for signs of moving soil, loose rocks, or a sudden increase in streamflow—indicators that a landslide may be imminent. Residents should leave immediately if any of these signs are observed.

Drivers are also being warned to be cautious when traveling on roads that pass through steep or rocky terrain. Falling rocks, mud, trees, and other debris could be dislodged by the unstable conditions.

Officials will continue to monitor the situation closely, and residents are encouraged to stay updated through local news and emergency services.
