MCDOWELL COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The Public Service Commission of West Virginia ordered a general investigation Tuesday into a sewer system spilling waste onto the ground between two McDowell County schools.

The Commission ordered its staff to investigate the town of Bradshaw’s system, but directed the town to enter into an operation and management (O&M) agreement with the McDowell County Public Service District to have the district oversee operations of the utility.

PSC staff, in a petition filed September 25, asserted the town’s sewer lift station has been spilling untreated sewage onto the ground near two schools between four and six months. This problem has not been corrected. Staff said the continued spillage of sewerage near Bradshaw Elementary School and River View High School “creates a risk of irreparable harm” and asked for interim action by the Commission and a general investigations into the system.

The staff enumerated other problems, too.

The town and McDowell County PSD were told to file their O&M agreement with the Commission within 30 days.
