WYOMING COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Tommy Ray Wilson, 67, of Kopperston, West Virginia, pleaded guilty to Attempt to Commit a Felony on October 9, 2024.

The charges stem from a July 2, 2024, incident in Oceana, where Corporal Justin Grimmette of the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Department responded to a stolen vehicle complaint.

According to a witness, Wilson entered her home without permission and took a set of car keys belonging to her father. He then took the father’s vehicle.

The father confirmed to law enforcement that Wilson did not have permission to use the vehicle. Wilson told officers he intended to return the car after getting married.

Gregory Bishop, Wyoming County Prosecutor, acknowledged the unusual circumstances of the case.

“The facts of this case are admittedly strange,” Bishop said. “But the end result is the same. It is a felony to take someone’s vehicle without permission, and we will prosecute those individuals without hesitation.”

Derek Laxton, Wyoming County Assistant Prosecutor, served as lead prosecutor. Corporal Grimmette investigated the case.

Wilson is scheduled to be sentenced on November 19, 2024. Attempt to Commit a Felony is punishable by one to three years in prison.
