Dan Hurley: “We had some text messages. Incredible message from him over the course of the weekend just talking about basketball and some different things, and letting me know that if he was there in LA, that I’d have his support. Just think about that, man, that blew my mind. And then we got into a text exchange. The exchange even went through to when I chose to go in another direction. It blew my mind when you get a text message from LeBron James, man, it’s crazy.”
UConn basketball coach Dan Hurley was on FS1’s The Herd on Thursday telling Colin Cowherd what LeBron James told him during the Los Angeles Lakers’ pursuit of the two-time National Championship winning coach.
Hurley said that LeBron told him he would ‘have his support’ in Los Angeles, and said the text messages between the two even continued after Hurley decided to spurn Los Angeles for Storrs, CT.
One thing fans quickly picked up on when the interview was posted to social media was the way Hurley recounted the conversation with LeBron. Hurley said that LeBron told him he’d have his support ‘ if he was there in LA’ , with the emphasis being on the ‘IF’ , and implying that he may not a part of the Lakers next season.
LeBron is expected to opt-out of his player option this summer and hit free agency, but there haven’t been any indications about a potential suitor for his services on the open market.
Phoenix, however, has been brought up as a possible landing spot given what happened at the NBA Draft Combine last month. LeBron’s son, Bronny James , worked out with only two teams at the combine, with one being the Lakers and the other being the Suns. LeBron has long publicly stated his desire to play alongside his son, and the idea of a 'last hurrah' Super Team in Phoenix alongside his generational contemporary Kevin Durant would be the type of riveting storyline that LeBron loves placing himself in.
