Well, that didn’t take long. Less than 24 hours after the Boston Celtics won the NBA Championship on Monday night, the Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly hiring JJ Redick as their new head coach.

Anthony Irwin of the Audacy Sports Podcast “Lakers Lounge” broke the news on Tuesday.

“I am told as of 11:42 central time, 9:42 time out there on the West Coast, according to people close to the situation who can’t speak publicly, the Lakers and JJ Redick have moved forward and JJ Redick is going to be the next coach of the Los Angeles Lakers,” Irwin said. “Details on the contract and all of that stuff is still going to come out.”

Redick played 15 seasons in the NBA for the Orlando Magic, Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers, New Orleans Pelicans, and Dallas Mavericks. He carved out a role for himself in the media landscape while still playing with his 2016 podcast at Yahoo! Sports.

Redick has since become widely respected in the NBA media world due to his podcasts and work as an analyst on ESPN. He recently launched a podcast with Lakers superstar LeBron James back in March.

The Lakers were reportedly interested in both Redick as well as University of Connecticut head coach Dan Hurley for their head coaching job. Hurley elected to stay at UConn, leaving the door wide open for Redick to take the job.
