Shamar Arnoux ‘s courtship with USC football was swift before he announced his commitment to the school on Wednesday morning. USC was the last program to offer a scholarship to the 6-foot-2, 175-pound cornerback. His first offer came over two years before from Mississippi State and the odds-on favorite to land Arnoux, Tennessee made him an offer in the summer of 2022. USC waited until June 16th to make a move, two days later he had an official visit and then he made his decision. The 45th nationally ranked CB would join his classmate and top-ranked 2025 QB, Julian Lewis at USC.

Lewis committed to USC in August of last year but continues to take OVs with interested parties. A spate of decommits led many to wonder if Lewis is as committed as he presents. Perhaps USC football’s sudden interest in Arnoux has something to do with the small but impactful exodus of talent.

Arnoux was being pursued actively by several schools. The front runners were the aforementioned Volunteers. He had originally committed to the program in April of 2023 but de-commited 10 months later. Since then, he visited Florida State and Auburn.

There is no non-circumstantial evidence that points to USC football’s anxiety over losing Lewis being the reason they pivoted so quickly to offering and impressing his Carrollton High School teammate, but it certainly looks to be an appeal to Lewis to secure his commitment.

Regardless of the motives behind Arnoux’s recruitment, it is a win-win for USC football. Is another three-star defensive back useful? Of course! But furthermore, they should be doing everything they can to secure Lincoln Riley’s next great QB. Adding a familiar face for a player leaving the friendly confines of small-town Georgia will go a long way in that effort.

It’s job #1 to lock in the most important position in team sports, especially in a Riley offense. There is a reason he has produced three Heisman trophy winners in seven seasons as a head coach, a lot of that has to do with recruiting.
