Three Dodgers Advance in All-Star Voting; Another Eliminated via Technical Knockout

The Los Angeles Dodgers had three players move on to the next round of All-Star voting, while one was eliminated because his position led the National League in votes.

Shortstop Mookie Betts, designated hitter Shohei Ohtani, and outfielder Teoscar Hernández each secured enough votes to survive the first phase of the All-Star balloting while first baseman Freddie Freeman was eliminated. This was because Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper earned the most votes in the NL, automatically giving him the starting assignment.

However, that could change with Harper going on the 10-day injured list Friday with a hamstring strain.

Betts, a seven-time All-Star in the outfield, is trying for his first All-Star selection at shortstop. If elected, he would join Trea Turner and Bill Russell as the only Dodger shortstop to receive a fan election.

Ohtani is searching for his fourth consecutive starting assignment as the designated hitter. He would be the second consecutive Los Angeles designated hitter to start for the NL, following J.D. Martinez in 2023.

Hernández represented Toronto in the 2021 Midsummer Classic. It would be the fifth time in six years the Dodgers have an outfielder elected by the fans if he tallies enough votes.

The second phase of voting begins on Sunday, June 30, at 10 a.m. PT and concludes on Wednesday, July 3, at 10 a.m. PT.
